For every project I will make a series of thumbnail sketches. The purpose of which is to explore which composition and size / shape format exemplifies the idea or mood I'm trying to convey.

Once I settle on a composition that works, I will create a more refined sketch or drawing. This allows me to explore the concept without investing a great deal of time and energy. It also allows for some experimentation with techniques, textures  and mediums.

If I'm happy with the sketch, I'll take everything I learned in the process and create the final work. In this case a charcoal drawing with red ink highlights.
